NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt ran a story about distracted driving this week.  This is a topic that is discussed frequently on our blog.  The story, which can be found below in the source link, admitted that the number one culprit for distracted driving continues to be texting while driving.  However, a new trend is beginning to emerge that is equally scary: surfing the internet on smartphones.

According to a survey released by State Farm with approximately 1,000 participants, nearly 88 percent owned a smartphone, which are commonly used to access the internet.  Of the 1,000 people polled, 29 percent admitted to surfing the internet on their phone while driving, which compared to 13 percent in a survey from 2009.  36 percent of people admitted to texting while driving.

This is troubling from an injury standpoint because according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,179 people died last year in car wrecks where a driver was distracted.  Keep in mind that this number only reflects the number of people that died and does not account for all of the people who survived the wreck but were seriously injured.  State and Federal laws have attempted to address this issue, but it seems that there is a problem enforcing these laws.  Additionally, many companies have introduced large advertising campaigns to warn of the dangers of distracted driving.  In any event, it appears that this is a tough message to get into the heads of the American people, and it looks like it will be a problem that we will have to continue to address for quite some time.

Remember, if you have been injured or have lost a loved one as a result of someone else's recklessness or negligence we are ready, willing, and able to assist you with your case.  Our injury or wrongful death consultations are free of charge, and we would be happy to discuss what we can do for you.  Our office is located in Mount Pleasant, but we accept cases from all over South Carolina.  Please call (843) 388-3661 to talk to one of our lawyers or schedule a consultation today.
